Artist Reception: Flora In-Person
Three series, separate but related, are represented in this body of work. Flowers are the common thread. All works were completed this past year.
The first series of paintings deals with the idea of having or not having a seat at the table. Each painting has a table with a missing place setting. A single chair is either facing or turned away from the table.
The second series addresses banned books and expression. Each group of banned or challenged books is paired with a visual artist working with similar themes. The bouquet resting on top has a specific meaning based on the Victorian language of flowers. This meaning also reflects the ideas in the books. Together they form a cake, each layer supporting the next.
The third series deals with the idea of isolation. Large bunches of flowers push up against a bell jar. The tension lies between the inside
and the outside.
I would like to note that while it might be interesting for the viewer to know what I was thinking while making these painting, enjoying the
color, pattern and shapes is enough. Simply finding beauty in something is also meaningful.
